The football World Cup (trophy pictured) is a high-profile example of a top-level international competition.

Athletics is an example of a sport in which the Olympic gold is considered an equal, or greater, achievement, than World Championship success.

A large number of sports and games have governing bodies which organise a high-level international competition knows as a world cup; some governing bodies use alternative but similar titles, for example world championship, world series or international cup; some use entirely unique names. The competition formats differ greatly, but ultimately they are contested by the elite competitors in their field and a champion (sometimes several champions in multi-event sports) are decided over their course. Victory in these international competitions is often the highest accolade that a competitor can achieve (with the occasional exception of Olympic gold).
