Equipoise is the state of being balanced or in equilibrium, usually connoting something that is a product of counterbalancing.

Equipoise is also a poetic term.

Equipoise or the Principle of Equipoise involves the ethical treatment of human subjects in experimental conditions. A subject should only be submitted to a randomized, controlled design if there is substantial uncertainty about which of the treatments would benefit the subject most.

Equipoise is the trade name for Boldenone undecyclenate, an anabolic steroid.

In legal terminology, equipoise refers to a balancing test of aggravating and mitigating factors when jurors consider the death penalty. When there are more aggravating factors, a death sentence is pronounced. When there are just as many mitigating factors as aggravating factors, the jurors are "in equipoise." Whether or not jurors in equipoise can issue a death sentence has been the subject of many legal battles. Certiorari for U.S. Supreme Court review was granted in the case Kansas v. Marsh, and is under review as of this writing (April 2006).
