EQEmu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EQEmulator (or EQEmu) is a GNU GPL open source server emulator for the MMORPG EverQuest. Normally, the game is a service that players pay for so they can connect to Sony Online Entertainment's exclusive servers. With an emulator like EQEmu, anyone can run a server. EQEmu has apparently been in development since around 2001 or 2002. According to statistics on the EQEmu website, emulated servers see dozens of players online, quite below the tens of thousands seen on SOE's official servers.
Currently EQEmu is not up to date with the current live client, some servers, although against the "rules" of EQEmu, release their own versions of the EverQuest patcher, distributing client versions that are compatible with their servers.

[edit] EQEmu Community
The EQEmu community is full of several amateur programmers and gaming enthusiasts, they release several tools to aid in the creation of a server
By far, the largest and most successful of the EQEmu servers is the Shards of Dalaya server. (Formerly known as Winters Roar.) The server is running a modified version of EQEmu with entirely custom quests, zones, and a different world map more in keeping with Everquest's original feel (Pre Planes of Power/Shadows of Luclin).
The EQEmu project have their own wiki hosted here, containing information for players to connect to existing servers or run their own.
[edit] EQEmu Database
The EQEmu server only provides the functionality to run your own everquest server. The other required piece is a good database full of content. The project currently working to build a database representing the original Everquest universe is [Project EQ].
[edit] EthernalQuest
Another EverQuest emulator is EthernalQuest, which is believed to have been in development since late 1999 or early 2000, however it does not seem to be supported anymore.
