The Epping Forest Keepers is an ancient body that is responsible for the management and care of Epping Forest, which covers approximately 10 miles of forest, bridleway, woodland, recreational space and parkland stretching from Leytonstone in east London, north to Epping in Essex. The forest is owned and managed by the City of London, also known as the Corporation of London. It is one of many open spaces that comes under the control of the Corporation of London, even though Epping Forest and the others are geographically a considerable distance from the square mile.Corporation of London Open Spaces
Epping Forest Keepers are sworn as special constables under section 43 of the Epping Forest Act 1878 for both the Essex and Metropolitan Police Districts, giving them police powers both inside and outside of the forest. There are currently 19 such constables.
Generally the forest keepers act as forest rangers and very rarely use their powers as a constable. Policing issues are mainly left to the local Home Office police forces, Essex Police or Metropolitan Police Service.
