EON FM

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EON FM was the name of a radio station which broadcasted in Melbourne, Australia during the 1980s. It was the first commercial FM station to commence broadcasting in Australia [1]. The first song played on the station was New kid in town by The Eagles. The station was a commercial flop for the first two years of its existence but soon developed a strong following amongst Melburnians thanks to a series of outdoor concerts featuring well-known Australian rock musicians. The station's distinctive blue-and-orange 92.3 EON-FM bumper stickers soon became a familiar site in Melbourne throughout the 1980s. In the late '80s, the station was sold and its name and frequency changed to 105.1 Triple M Melbourne.

Many well-known media personalities started their careers working for the station including news reader Jennifer Keyte and comedy team The D-Generation. EON FM's former frequency, 92.3 MHz FM, is now occupied by ethnic narrowcast station, 3ZZZ.

Some well known announcers to grace the EON FM airwaves were Lee Simon, Peter Grace, Karl Van Est, Joe Miller, John Peters, Mark Irvine and Peter O'Callaghan (original D-generation anchor)
