Envigado

Envigado is a municipality in the Colombian department of Antioquia. It forms part of the metropolitan area of Medellín in the south of the Aburrá Valley. The population at the 1993 census was 115,484; as of 2005 it has approximately 180,000 inhabitants.

Founded in 1775, Envigado was declared a municipality in 1814. Its name comes from the large trees that were once found there and which were used for the rafters (vigas) in constructing houses.

The principal economic activity is manufacturing, particularly textiles, soaps and perfumes.
