Enterprise Data Management

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enterprise Data Management or EDM is:

1. The set of processes by which all the data in the enterprise is managed from source to storage to end-use and end of life cycle.

The movement (or copying) of data from a set of systems A to a system B or set of systems and is not limited to the movement of data from source systems to the corporate or enterprise data warehouse. If the general definition is used and EDM is defined as the movement of data then effectively this includes reporting tools as they extract (select) data and present it. Therefore EDM is constricted to the movement of data from systems that do not include presentation to the user.

EDM should not be seen exclusively as a data warehousing activity primarily because data cleansing and data quality is often done without the use of a data warehouse. Also the movement of data from a legacy system to a new system would also be part of EDM and it could be effectively completed without a data warehouse.

[edit] Strategy and governance

EDM requires a strategic approach to choosing the right processes, technologies and governance. While traditionally thought of as a technology problem data/information can now be thought of as a business problem and as such can require a different range of techniques.

MDM - Master Data Management

CDI - Customer Data Integration

Data Quality

[edit] Master Data Management

MDM includes the standardisation of organisation, product, customer and employee data for use in operations across the enterprise.

[edit] Customer Data Integration

CDI's aim is a 'single view of all aspects related to the customer' including sales, contact details and service history.

[edit] Data Quality

Data quality improvement includes the improvement of data within a single system i.e., extracting the data from a system and bulk cleansing it

2. an enterprise wide PLM/ PDM data management system that facilitates the communication of product data through the whole organisation (not just in the engineering department) as well as links to other corporate systems such as ERM CRM SCM.
