Enoch Cree Nation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Enoch Cree Nation lies on the western edge of Edmonton, Alberta. It numbers approximately 900 members on-reserve, with more residing in nearby Edmonton.
The reserve is currently in negotiations with the Canadian Crown regarding land claim settlements and the use of reserve land by the Department of Defense as a bombing range during the Second World War. In October, 2006, the Enoch Cree will open the River Cree Casino and Resort, a $150-million (CAN$) casino, hotel and sports complex on reserve land that borders Edmonton on the west, near the giant West Edmonton Mall. There's been little negative press about the development, with only complaints coming from the mall and other nearby city casinos. Editorial writers in the Edmonton papers have speculated that the first nation's casino, which will allow smoking, will draw patrons from those casinos and other entertainment venues, as the City of Edmonton is smoke-free.
