Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational oil and gas company, with a presence in 70 countries and 71,500 employees. Its stock is traded on the Milan Stock Exchange and also the New York Stock Exchange. Eni is currently Italy's largest industrial company. It has been very recently privatized, the first 14.7 percent being sold to the public for $4.1 billion in 1995.

Eni was founded in 1953 by the Italian government, to promote and develop a national energy strategy based on the concentration of all the activities in the energy sector into one group. The name derives from the initials of the company's original full title Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, but is no longer used as an acronym. Eni was led for many years by Enrico Mattei. The Eni also owns the Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (AGI), one of the main Italian news agencies.

Sales 77.0 billion Euro

With its refining capacity of 933,000 barrels per day, Eni is Europe's third largest refiner. Its crude oil production comes primarily from Libya, Egypt, Nigeria, the Congo, the North Sea, and Angola, with smaller amounts of crude oil production in Tunisia and in the United States. Eni's China production began in 1992, although it currently amounts to only 1 percent of Eni's total crude oil production.
