Encounter may mean:

  • In India, "encounter" is used to mean a violent clash between police or security forces on the one hand and criminals, terrorists, or insurgents on the other hand. Most often, these encounters end with the death of the latter. It has been alleged that usually this encounters are set up by police forces to eliminate known troublemakers. Gangsters in Mumbai and Sikh insurgents in Punjab have often met their end in such "encounters."
