Encephalocele is a protrusion of brain tissue and meninges through a congenital fissure in the skull. The most common cause of encephalocele is hydrocephalus, which is an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid within the cranium. Most babies with encephalocele do not live or are severely retarded, but sometimes early surgery can correct this problem. Occasionally, an encephalocele can be nothing more than cerebral spinal fluid sacs, which present a slightly less difficult method of removal.
