Emley, West Yorkshire

Emley is a small village in West Yorkshire between Huddersfield and Wakefield with a population of 1,867 according to the 2001 census.

It is 7km (4.5m) east of Huddersfield and 8km (5m) west of Wakefield. The village lies in moorland close to the Emley Moor TV Transmitter.

Emley Moor colliery closed in 1985 after a year-long strike, and is now a business park.

Emley is the home of AFC Emley non-league football club. The original village team, Emley A.F.C., made national headlines in the 1997/98 season when they progressed to the 3rd round of the FA cup, beating Morecambe and Lincoln city in the first and second rounds. They lost in the third round, 2-1, to West Ham United. The team then moved to Wakefield in 2001, and are now known as Wakefield F.C..

The village has three pubs: The White Horse, The Green Dragon, and The Wentworth.
