Emancipation (horse)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emancipation was a champion Australian thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1979. A daughter of Bletchingly from the Gunsynd mare Ammo Girl she was bred by Mark Hough in New South Wales.
She developed a reputation as a freakish performer with a remarkable burst of speed and will to win, doing the unbelievably amazing on the track one day and the shockingly bad the next. The grey mare also had a tendency for meanness with kicking and biting being favourite pastimes.
Her dam was purchased from the famous trainer Tommy Smith for A$1,700 due to her unsound confirmation and her sire, just starting his stud career and an unknown quantity, was standing at a fee of only A$1,500 at the time.
As her breeder did not wish to race her and was only interested in her as a broodmare he approached trainer Neville Begg to recommend someone who would take her on lease.

[edit] Racing Career
Un-raced as a two-year-old she quickly developed into an outstanding sprinter-miler winning 10 of her 13 starts as a three-year-old and 9 of 15 as a four-year-old.
Some of her finest moments included defeating the reigning Australian sprint champion Manikato in the 1983 STC George Ryder Stakes, the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) Doncaster Handicap of the same year, carrying 54.5kg, and the 1984 AJC All Aged Stakes, this time beating Golden Slipper winner Sir Dapper, a champion son of Vain.
Retired to stud after 28 starts, her record stood at 19 wins, 1 second and no thirds with prize money totalling A$550,510.
She was awarded the 1983-84 Australian Horse of the Year award.
[edit] At Stud
At stud, she produced Royal Pardon (by Vice Regal), a grey colt who was a stakeswinner and AJC Derby placegetter, while daughters Virage (by Kenmare) and La Suffragette (by Palace Music) have produced the multiple Group One winners Virage De Fortune (by Anabaa) and Railings (by Zabeel).
