Elyria is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, at the forks of the Black River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55,953. It is the county seat of Lorain CountyGR6. Named by early settler, Heman Ely, according to local legend by combining his name with the locale of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Home to Lorain County Community College and the headquarters of Invacare and Ridge Tool. The Elyria High School Pioneer Marching Band is a source of pride for the community.

Elyria is located at 41°22′24″N, 82°6′6″W (41.373396, -82.101692)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 51.6 km² (19.9 mi²). 51.5 km² (19.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.15%) is water.

Also, the Black River is formed in Elyria.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 55,953 people, 22,409 households, and 14,834 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,086.2/km² (2,813.7/mi²). There were 23,841 housing units at an average density of 462.8/km² (1,198.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.35% White, 14.17% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.78% of the population.

There were 22,409 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,156, and the median income for a family was $45,846. Males had a median income of $34,898 versus $24,027 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,344. About 9.5% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Elyria. Amtrak Train 29, the westbound Capitol Limited, is scheduled to depart Elyria at 2:57am daily with service to Sandusky, Toledo, Waterloo, Elkhart, South Bend, and Chicago. Amtrak Train 30, the eastbound Capitol Limited, is scheduled to depart Elyria at 12:10am daily with service to Cleveland, Alliance, Pittsburgh, Connellsville, Cumberland, Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry, Rockville, and Washington, DC. Amtrak Train 49, the westbound Lake Shore Limited, is scheduled to depart Elyria at 3:28am daily with service to Sandusky, Toledo, Bryan, Waterloo, Elkhart, South Bend, and Chicago. Amtrak Train 48, the eastbound Lake Shore Limited, is scheduled to depart Elyria at 3:03am daily with service to Cleveland, Erie, Buffalo-Depew, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady, and Albany-Rensselaer. Train 48 splits at this point with one section proceeding to Boston via Pittsfield, Springfield, Worcester and Framingham. The other section continues to Croton-Harmon and New York City.
