[edit] About Elmore

Elmore is located in what used to be known as The Black Swamp, a sprawling area of marsh that covered the majority of Ottawa County and was primarily inhabited by local Native American tribes up until the 19th century. The area has long since been drained, and area farmers maximize the potential of the nutrient rich soils by turning out successful harvests each year.

Today, the village has made a most extraordinary transition, and has evolved far from a simple small town. Preserving the historic value of the downtown area, business owners offer a world of unique delights, and the convenient shopping areas attract tourists from across the nation who come to visit the many antique shops. Complete with old fashion street posts, many brick roads, and curbside benches, a visit to the village is said to be like taking a step back in time. Elmore is home to the nationally renowned botanical preserve- Schedel Arboretum and Gardens. A bike and foot path, numerous parks, the regionally famed golf course- Sugar Creek, turn of the century cemeteries, river-front views, and old and newly developed neighborhoods are all included in the village's reputation.

Elmore also celebrates diversity. It is home to many historic churches that work cooperatively to support the local Elmore Retirement Village. Elmore is a village lush with trees of every type, lining the roadways, and many of the old original victorian homes. The Portage River runs directly adjacent to the village, all the way to Lake Erie. The bells of Saint Johns are heard throughout the village on Sundays, and believe it or not, Elmore has one of the lowest crime rates in the country today.

The suburban/rural community is located 17 miles (27 km) south-east of Toledo, Ohio and has easy access to the city via an Ohio Turnpike exit, OH-51, and US-20. Many state parks along Lake Erie, including Maumee Bay, are also located 10 miles north of the village. Elmore is also conveniently located roughly 20 miles south-west of The Lake Erie Islands resort area, including Cedar Point.

The University of Toledo, The Medical University of Ohio, Owens State Community College, Mercy College, and Lourdes College are all within a short commute to Toledo. Bowling Green State University, Terra Community College, Tiffin University, and Heidelberg College are also a short 25 minute drive away.
