Elmo's World is a segment of the children’s television show Sesame Street featuring Elmo, a small red monster who speaks in third person and is perpetually 3 1/2 to 4 years old. The show also features Mr. Noodle, a human mime character, and Dorothy, a goldfish. The segment was first introduced the beginning of its 30th season on November 16, 1998.

The segment takes place in a computer animated crayon-drawn apartment, presumably where Elmo lives.

Each day, the segment begins with Elmo announcing the topic for the day. Then, there is a series of skits and interviews centered on that topic. The skits and interviews are essentially the same everyday only changing the subject matter. They also always appear in the same repetitive order.

In the Season 37 episode "Cookie World", the first 10 minutes of that episode are a spoof of the segment with Cookie Monster in place of Elmo.

Currently the segment occupies the last 15 to 25 minutes of each Sesame Street show, but also has been syndicated - it appears as a separate show on the United Kingdom lifestyle channel LivingTV, and dubbed in Irish on TG4.

[edit] Segment format

Elmo's World, though not its own show, has precisely the same segments, every day, appealing to young children's attraction to ritualization and routine:

  • Theme Song
  • What is Elmo Thinking of (open the door- he opens his closet door and items from the category come bursting out)
  • Intro Video Segment
  • Ask Mister Noodle (with windowshade)
  • Ask Someone Else (young children are displayed talking about the category)
  • Ask a Baby
  • Elmo Has (video E-)Mail (with computer) (Completely Random)
  • Elmo Has a Question for the Viewers (counting)
  • What Else? (with drawer)
  • Elmo's Friend
  • Elmo Wants to Know More (TV)
  • Talk to the Subject
  • Dorothy's Imagination
  • Elmo's Home Video (Discontinued after 2000)
  • The (Subject) Song (one or two words repeated constantly to the tune of the chorus of Jingle Bells) (On one episode of the subject "Farm", there's a tune playing to the tune of Old McDonald Had a Farm)
