[edit] History
The school was established in 1563 by Elizabeth I, in order to promote Protestantism in Guernsey. The first schoolmaster was Hadrian à Saravia, who went on to become one of the translators of the King James Version of the Bible.
The present building was erected in 1826, and remains a prominent feature of the St Peter Port skyline.
The entire school was evacuated during World War II to Great Hucklow in Derbyshire due to the Occupation of the Channel Islands by Nazi Germany.
There is a rumour that a ghost of one of the Nazi Soliders walks the corridors at night from when the island was under occupation.
[edit] Admissions
It has traditionally been a single-sex boys-only College. In 1999, a co-educational Sixth Form was established.
As an independent school, the majority of pupils are fee-paying, however the States of Guernsey awards scholarships annually on the basis of Eleven plus results.
However, if you have attended the primary school section of Elizabeth College you are not permitted to take the eleven plus and therefor have to be a fee-payer.
Recently the admissions department has installed a new system by where children from states schools can also apply.
