[edit] History

The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co. of Illinois was incorporated on March 18, 1887, and the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co. of Indiana was incorporated on April 13, 1887.[citation needed]

The current Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern Railway was created on December 4, 1888 when the two rail companies merged together, and the new railway officially began operations on January 1, 1889.[citation needed]United States Steel acquired the railroad in 1901. Between 1988 and 2001, the EJ&E was co-owned by U.S. Steel and the Blackstone Group, under the holding company Transtar. In 2001, Blackstone ended their association with Transtar, taking as its proportion of the assets the Great Lakes Fleet; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway and the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. It subsequently sold these asset to the Canadian National. The EJ&E; Union Railroad; and Birmingham Southern reverted to sole ownership of U.S. Steel.[citation needed]

[edit] Awards and recognition

On May 16, 2006, EJE was the recipient of the 2005 Bronze E.H. Harriman Award for employee safety in group C (line-haul railroads with less than 4 million employee hours per year).[1]
