Elbridge Ayer (E. A.) Burbank was born on August 10, 1858 in Harvard, Illinois to Abner Jewett & Anna Maria (Ayer) Burbank and died April 21, 1949 in San Francisco, California after being struck by a cable car on January 27th in front of the Manx Hotel. 'E. A.' was the only artist to paint Geronimo from life. He painted or sketched more than 1,200 native Americans from 125 tribes. Elbridge was a second cousin, three times removed from Luther Burbank - and a second cousin, twice removed from Gerald Ford, 38th president of the US. Burbank, Oklahoma is named after him - and is not far from Remington, Oklahoma - named about the same time for Frederic Remington. He spent many months, over several years, at the Hubbell Trading Post. E. A. was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, referred to as 'manic depression' at the time, and was treated at several different facilities during his life - most notably for over ten years at the Napa State Mental Hospital in California.
Final Resting Place(s): Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, San Francisco, California, then Forest View Abby in Rockford, Illinois, then in 1984 to Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Harvard, Illinois
