El callejón de los milagros (Spanish for "The alley of miracles", released in the United States as Midaq Alley and as Miracle Alley in Australia) is a 1994 film of the cinema of Mexico with a star-studded cast lead by Ernesto Gómez Cruz and Salma Hayek. This film was based on the novel by Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz Midaq Alley.
The original story takes place in Cairo in the 1940s, but in the film, adapted by Vicente Leñero, takes place in the 1990s in a lower-middle class barrio of Mexico City. The story is seen from three perspectives: Don Ru (Ernesto Gómez Cruz), the owner of a cantina where most of the men in the story gather to drink and play cards, Alma (Salma Hayek), the beautiful girl of the neighborhood who dreams of passion, and Susanita (Margarita Sanz who won an Ariel Award for this role), the owner of the apartment complex where Alma and many of the other characters live.

Don Ru (Ernesto Gómez Cruz) owns a local cantina where his son Chava spends most of its time. Güicho's son, Abel (Bruno Bichir), dreams of working in the United States to make enough money to date the beautiful Alma (Salma Hayek), his neighbor. Alma does not wait for Abel when she meets José Luis (Daniel Giménez Cacho).
Alma's mother Doña Cata (María Rojo) reads tarot and tells one of her clients Susanita (Margarita Sanz) that she will meet the man of her dreams, this man turns out to be Güicho (Luis Felipe Tovar), the bartender at Don Ru's bar. Suffering from mid-life crisis, Don Ru's cheats on his wife Eusebia with Jimy Ernesto Soberanes, when Chava finds out he beats and almost kills Jimy.
