El Norte, founded by Rodolfo Junco de la Vega, is a major newspaper in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. Today, the newspaper has evolved into the Grupo Reforma news group, which it started in 1993.
In 1962 it was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot prize.
It was also awarded the Mergenthaler Award in 1963 and 1976.
During the 1970s and 1980s and 1990s El Norte became important due to its great efforts to denounce government corruption. Due to its principles of independence in journalism, the government shortened printing paper supply to El Norte. The company then battled the government monopoly over printing paper, a battle that it finally won.
The newspaper was the first one in Mexico to separate its commercial division from its journalist division, a move that favored impartial points of view, as it would remove all temptation for the journalist to write favorable notes on behalf of its sponsors. This move, started in the 1970s, has been exported to all newspapers members of the newsgroup.
El Norte was also the first newspaper in Mexico to apply voter preference polls, and to publish candidate debates.
In 1996, the paper started experimenting with delivering news online, and it was one of the first online newspapers in Mexico.
