The film is based on tango dancing, an integral part of Argentine culture.

The 1991 film is an adaption of the theatrical play by Carlos Gorostiza, one of the essential plays of the Open theatre movement, formed by many of the most important names in Argentine theatre. The story revolves around the central character of Tuco (portrayed by Carlos Carella) a singer who aims to make his debut on television.
