From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Einar Hjörleifsson Kvaran (December 6, 1859 in Vellanes, Iceland as Einar Hjörleifsson – May 21, 1938 in Reykjavík) was an Icelandic editor, novelist, poet, and playwright.
Einar Kvaran was the son of Rev. Hjörleifur Einarsson and Guðlaug Eyjólfsdóttir. His name was originally Einar Hjörleifsson but he (along with his brothers and nephews) adopted the family name Kvaran in 1916.
Besides editing Icelandic-language publications based in Winnipeg, Einar also was an editor in both Reykjavik and Akureyri. He also wrote numerous short stories, novels, plays and poems. In 1913 the Government of Iceland granted him, along with various others Icelandic writers, a stipend to enable him to devote himself entirely to writing. A poll taken in 1923 voted him the most popular writer in Iceland.
A biography of Einar was written by Gils Guðmundsson in 1997. It contains a listing of all his major works.
