Eileen Galvin is a character that appears in the Konami video game Silent Hill 4: The Room. She is Henry Townshend's young neighbour, living adjacent to his apartment in Room 303, and is presumably in her early twenties. Although Henry has lived at the South Ashfield Heights apartment building for over two years, Eileen has only a passing familiarity with him. It is believed that Eileen lived in Room 303 long before Henry's arrival.

[edit] Personality

Eileen has an outgoing personality and does not appear to be a shy person, despite the fact that she never converses with Henry. This is evident by her first speaking appearance, when Henry looks through the peephole of his front door, Eileen, speaking to herself and looking right at Henry’s door, mentions her preoccupation with a party later that evening (to which she shows interest in inviting Henry to accompany her). It also appears that her luck has been down lately, in all likelyhood involving past relationships or a recent break-up. The game booklet states that "She has a kind personality," and this seems likely considering the friendliness afforded to her by her neighbours. Although Eileen is not nearly as sexually extroverted as Cynthia Valasquez, evident by her more conservative demeanor and casual clothing, this is not to say that Eileen is dowdy or blind to her physical beauty, as the purple dress that Eileen intends to wear to her upcoming party very obviously highlights her curves and attractive figure. Eileen also seems unnaturally aware of her surroundings and the comings-and-goings of her fellow residents, being the first to notice that Henry has not left his apartment for some time and that something may be amiss. She is the first to call on the building's superintendent, Frank Sunderland, to check up on Henry's well-being. Later, she questions other residents regarding Henry's background and activities, albeit to no avail.

Eileen appears to enjoy collecting plush toys, animals presumably (she owns a stuffed toy of the Lakeside Amusement Park's mascot, "Robbie the Rabbit," clearly visible from the hole in Henry's wall). This would suggest that, like Henry, Eileen has either lived in or visited Silent Hill at some point in her life. She is also very conscientious of the tidyness and cleanliness of her apartment, as she can be seen frustratedly searching for her broom in one instance.

Eileen eventually winds up trapped alongside Henry in his nightmarish existence, and is severely injured by Walter Sullivan before Henry is able to overcome the various obstacles and opponents blocking his path in order to rescue her from her apartment. Eileen, however, appears strongly resolved to survive, as she is the only victim to have ever survived Walter's wrath, although this may also be due to Henry's intervention at the last possible moment. Slipping back into reality momentarily, Eileen is immediately rushed to St. Jerome's Hospital for emergency treatment, and wakes to find herself, once again, caught in Walter's hellish reality, but with the advantage of having Henry to accompany her throughout the ordeal. Although badly injured and scared out of her mind, Eileen will assist Henry during conflict. She will initially attack opponents with her weak and short-ranged handbag, but Henry is able to locate and provide Eileen with larger and more dangerous bludgeoning objects, such as chains and batons. As the game progresses, it becomes evident that Eileen is being slowly consumed by the surrounding evil forces, so that Walter may better control her due to her integral role as the pivotal sacrifice in the "21 Sacraments" ritual. When Eileen takes heavy damage during battle, she will be strongly influenced and controlled by this force. This will become evident when her speech pattern reverts to an almost infant-like manner, for example: "I'm scawed!" Eventually, she will no longer render assistance to Henry and will simply stand close by, taunting him with insidious and strange remarks, and if damage continues to occur, Eileen will begin attacking herself with whatever weapon she happens to be carrying at the time.

Eileen is a deeply caring person who empathises strongly with Walter's tragic and abusive past, and is the only character who attempts to comfort and console him, showing that she understands his pain. This is in stark contrast to her fellow neighbours, including Henry, who perceives Walter as nothing more than a psychotic murderer, and wishes only to escape his grasp. Richard Braintree's contempt for Walter extends even further, having been the person responsible for chasing Walter away from the apartment building as a child who would wander the halls, hoping to catch a glimpse of his "mother," Room 302. After becoming trapped in Walter's world, Richard shows nothing but disgust for Walter and attempts to hunt him down and execute him with his revolver.

[edit] Trivia

  • Contrary to popular belief, bumping into or accidently attacking Eileen will not cause her any damage. Her screams of pain are simply attributed to adding a more realistic feel, as being hit with a golf club or pipe tends to hurt.
  • If you finish the game with at least a 90% completion rating, you will receive a sub-machine gun with unlimited ammo, which is Eileen's ultimate weapon. Unfortunately, the weapon damages her as she fires it. This is intended to stop players from simply standing by and allowing Eileen to gun down all opposition encountered in the later section of the game.
