Eighty Four, Pennsylvania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eighty Four, PA is a small community approximately 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, PA and is in the Pittsburgh Metro Area.

There is some dispute amongst local historians regarding the origin of the name, however, the most plausible seems to be that Eighty Four was given its name to commemorate the election of Grover Cleveland as President of the United States in 1884.

Other origin stories include:

  • The village was located 80 degrees and 4 minutes west longitude.
  • Eighty Four, PA was mail drop #84 on the Railway Mail Service.
  • The village is located on the 84th tract of land carved out by the Northwest Ordinance.
  • There was confusion with the mail for Smithfield A (Eighty Four) and Smithfield B. Since mail for A was getting mixed up with mail for stop B, to end the confusion the town was named after the year 1884. This was a story that surfaced during the centennial 1984.
  • General David "Crazy Legs" Hamilton and his outfit of 84 soldiers held off an attack of outlaws on December 30th of 1869 at the present day location of the town.
  • The state historical marker sign near the post office says the community was named to commemorate the election of President Grover Cleveland in 1884. This is the most likely reason for the name.

Eighty-four is accessible via Pennsylvania state highways 519 and 136 and interstates 70 and 79. The closest international airport is the Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay Township.

[edit] Features

Eighty-four is home to three golf courses and two hotels as well as the Wylandville Elementary School (with kindergarten and grades one through five), a part of the Canon-McMillan School District.

It is also the site of the 84 Lumber Company's headquarters and home of the first 84 Lumber store.

One thing about 84 Lumber that is certainly true....Joe Hardy likes to swear like a sailor and grab himself in a most unpleasant manor. He does this at any time without any provocation. He also has a company policy that forbids tattoos, long hair for men, and facial hair.

It is speculated that Eighty Four Pennsylvania was founded by Sir Thomas Jakubik in 1884; owner of a major steel company at the time. His son, Wayne Jakubik went on to start a large mission just outside of Houston, Texas in a city called Baytown. The church still stands today with a very large, but cult-like following. Their religion is now based off the worship of aliens---not unlike the Hale-Bopp Comet worshipers from California that committed suicide on March 28, 1997.
