Eight Mile Plains Busway Station, Brisbane
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Eight Mile Plains Busway Station, at Eight Mile Plains, is part of the South-East Busway serviced by TransLink bus routes. It is the last station on the South-East Busway, and is connected to the Springwood Bus Station by transit lanes on the Pacific Motorway used by Logan City Bus Service. It is in Zone 4 of the TransLink integrated public transport system.
Indigenously, the name of the Aboriginal clan formerly occupying this area is uncertain. However, it is thought that the clan most likely to have lived in the area was Turrbal from the Chepara clan. After white settlement, this area was named Eight Mile Plains which refers to the topography of the place and distance, eight miles, by bush track to One Mile Swamp, which is now formerly known as Woollongabba. In 1864, the Brisbane Agricultural Reserve extended its fields from Coopers Plains through to the Eight Mile Plains Agricultural Reserve. During that time, Eight Mile Plains was formed and comprised of the current suburbs of Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Kuraby, Runcorn, Stretton and Algester. Also during the mid-late 1800s, Charles Baker purchased acreage from a sheep herder named Wilson in 1857. Fox hunting developed on the Baker property and he also built a hotel on the land. In 1868, he became the postmaster of Eight Mile Plains and his services were called upon when the Cobb and Co. services started a regular run through Eight Mile Plains through to the Logan and Nerang River settlements. Ironically enough, this would eventually become an actual bus station.
Dominant natural features of the Eight Mile Plains district include the Bulimba Creek which sits adjacent to the bus station and has unfortunately suffered due to the increase of urbanisation. Before settlement, the area was home to a diverse range of plants and animals and there are also areas of relic bushland and a small number of market gardens. This specific bus station furthers its diversity as it is enclosed by a number of major roads including, Logan Road, Miles Platting Road, the South East Freeway and the Gateway Arterial Road. Prior to the Busway’s development, options to improve public transport services in the areas that were not serviced by rail were explored. Although light rail and heavy rail options were in consideration, it was decided that the flexibility of buses best suited the unique nature of Brisbane’s urban development. In June 1995, consultants McCormick Rankin were commissioned to develop a Busway Strategy for Brisbane. More than eleven years on, the Busway’s occupancy has flourished in numbers as the public begin to acknowledge its efficiency.
