Eidolon Online

Eidolon Online was a small project started by Brandon H. (aka Apep) and Calvin H. (no relation) (aka Cal) in late 2004. The project, a Graphical Multi-User Dungeon, was developed by a small group of players from the game Realms of Kaos. In early 2005, the first private Alpha test was conducted with moderate success. Unfortunately, the project was ultimately doomed. Mismanagement and failing interests lead to the dismissal of much of the development team, leaving a skeleton staff of developers to work on the project. Shortly after concluding the Alpha test phase, development began on the Beta phase. Beta was slated to be a complete rewrite of both the game client and server.

Prior to the beginning of the Beta test phase, lead(and sole) programmer Calvin H. left the project, taking the Beta source with him. By this time, much of the remaining development team had lost interest in the project, with no active player base and little visible progress, the project appeared very much stagnant.

Following the closure of the project, co-founder Brandon H. attempted to sell the Alpha phase source code to the development team at Aleveria, in exchange for a position of power on their team, and a stake in any profits that may have been made in the future. Upon the discovery of this bargain, legal threats were made (Calvin H. was, and remains, the legal copyright holder for both the Alpha and Beta code bases.) In the end, the founders of Aleveria were given permission to use and build on the Eidolon Alpha source code, under the conditions that it would not be redistributed, and that Brandon H. would have no involvement in the project.

In April of 2006, an Aleveria administrator broke their agreement and provided the full source code to the development team at Realms of Kaos: Revolution(effectively making RoK:R a derivative work of Realms of Kaos, Eidolon, and Aleveria.) Following this, the rogue developer from Aleveria joined the RoK:R development team.

In September 2006, the source code for Eidolon Beta project was lost to a hard drive crash, effectively putting the project to rest forever.
