Egbert, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Egbert is a very small hamlet with a population of less than 100 people located in Essa Township in the County of Simcoe in the province of Ontario. It is located about 100 kilometers northwest of Toronto and about 10 kilometers northeast of Alliston and about 8 kilometers northwest of Cookstown.

Located at the intersection of Essa Township sideroad 10 and concession 9, the area was largely settled by settlers from Northern Ireland in the 1840's. It once had a general store and a church. Both are now closed.

It is best known as the home, since 1988, for the Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments operated by the Canadian federal government's environmental ministry, Environment Canada. There is a hourly reporting weather station at the site. The facility is located to the west of Egbert on the 8th Concession just north of the 10th Sideroad of Essa Township.

Egbert also contains the Ontario Vipassana Centre which provides non-sectarian practical guidance in the art of meditation. 10 day silent meditation retreats are offered here for free.
