Edward C. Reed High School is a public secondary school in Sparks, Nevada and is one of only three public high schools run by the Washoe County School District within the city of Sparks. The school was founded in the winter of 1974 to accommodate the ever growing population of students that had flooded Sparks High School's campus.

[edit] History

Edward C. Reed High School is named after Judge Edward C. Reed, a Senior United States District Judge for the District of Nevada. Reed was born 1924 in Mason, Nevada. He served in the United States Army (1943-1946) after which he returned home to attend the University of Nevada, Reno where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (1949). He graduated from Harvard Law School three years later with his Doctor of Jurisprudence and went back home to Northern Nevada. He was an active member of the community, serving on the Washoe County School Board from 1956-1972 and served as president of the board in 1959, 1963, and 1963. He practiced law as the Special Deputy Attorney General for the State of Nevada from 1967 until his appointment to District Court in 1979 where he was on the bench until 1986.

While the school was being built, the district held a vote of future students on what to name the school. Although students decided that the alliteration of Reed Raiders sounded best, the Reed Conquistadors was also a popular choice - garnering the second most votes.

After its opening, Reed High School quickly became a dominant force even among the longer established schools in the Truckee Meadows.

Reed High continues its tradition of school pride and community by fostering a family-like environment by hiring many of its former students as teachers.
