NIGERIA'S EDUCATION REFORMS: PRIVATISING UNITY SCHOOLS NOT THE ANSWER.

Our government is doing well to improve on our education and is indeed commendable.

But privatising the Unity Schools is not the right approach as it won't augur well. Rather, let the government identify the problems of not achieving the desired goal of the much expended on the unity schools ( as heard is the main reason why government want to privatise the unity schools ) and solve the problems by proffering lasting remedy.

For instance, some Unity Schools have inadequate infrastructural facilities / Library and insufficient tutors which the government ought to look into properly but goverment have done nothing to them. So the question now is, how would government achieve desired goal when there are so many things they have left undone.

And even at the government's shortcomings most unity schools still record good result, as most students in Unity Schools don't lag behind, they have done and doing well in various subjects in spite of all odds.

Actually, that is not the main reason why government want to privatise Unity Schools. The implicity is that there is vested interest by some people in the echelon of the society who run private schools but have less students and then want government to privatise all government Schools so that they will have enough Students in their Schools.

So, saying that the desired goal is not achieved from the much expended on the Unity Schools is a bareface camouflage, calculated design to privatise the unity schools.

But if it is not so, the Minister of Education, Dr.Oby Ezekwesili should think deeply first in order not to bring another onslaught in our educational system just like what the then Minister of Education did by scrapping off A'Levels in our educational system.

Therefore let Dr. Oby Ezekwesili recollect our educational system during the A 'Level days we had Federal Schools of Arts and Science both for Remedials, Lower Six and Upper six Classes which the then Minister of Education scrapped off without fathoming / envisaging what it could cause to our education in higher levels and she would understand that the A 'Level days was better.

But today, what we see in the academic performance of our students in the higher levels is very poor to compare to the A 'Level days. The A'Level days helped so much, in fact to be explicit, the A'Level days prepared so many students academically, inter alia.

Scrapping off A'Levels in our educational system is the first onslaught in our educational system as it is having adverse effects on our education in the higher levels. And the then Minister of Education wherever he is today, must be regretting why he scrapped off A' Levels in our educational system considering the increased poor academic performance of students in the higher levels since after he scrapped off A 'Levels.

Let government reverse to A' Levels as it is one of the best reforms that can improve on our education. Dr. Oby Ezekwesili should not be myopic like the then Minister of Education but must be proactive with fore-knowledge.

Our entire Education is a prejudice, the things obtainable in our education are no longer there and the problem is like an Ocean surge which should be addressed properly and privatisation is not the answer.

Reforms can be done in the Unity Schools without privatising them by doing the necessary things required.

If the Unity Schools are privatised, the school fees would increase and the Unity Schools would thence be only for the students from rich homes as the students from poor homes will withdraw.

Government should consider students from poor homes in the Unity Schools whom their parents/guardians out of necessity send them to the Unity Schools sacrificing all what they have as education is the best legacy Parents / Guardians can give to their chilldren / wards and because education is the ability to meet life's situations and not privatise the Unity Schools.

Unity Schools should not be privatised and I crave the indulgence of all well-meaning Nigerians both in diaspora to that so that our orientation on education won't be changed to private schools where we pay higher fees.

Unity Schools was established by the government in all States to strenghten the unity of this Nation. So if really the government still want to uphold the purpose for establishing the Unity Schools, the government will not relent in sponsoring the Unity Schools and would do all best for the Unity Schools to improve on them which will not be at the expense of the students.

Government ought be relevant, responsible and responsive to the demands of the Unity Schools in all............................
