[edit] Personality and interests
Something of a miser and a layabout, Eddy is the self-appointed leader of the trio of Eds, who are usually at the centre of each episode in the program. Whilst he usually formulates the plans, he leaves all the work to Ed and Edd aka Double-D.
Whilst cunning, Eddy is portrayed as a complete failure when it comes to education (a shot of his report card in the episode Mission Ed-Possible, which also labels him a megalomaniac, shows that he has an F grade in every subject). Not good with numbers or grammar, he hates education and school, and hardly ever considers the consequences of his own actions, this being apparent in a lot of his scams e.g. he decided to frighten Kevin over his fear of needles, never thinking that his nemesis might decide to beat him up after the truth came out. As well as not foreseeing such side affects of his actions, he also won't take responsibility and/or blame for them.
He is selfish and will often try to either get a laugh, or a buck, out of other people's expense. Also, he is portrayed as a McGuffin, e.g. he once tried to become the mascot of the school team, just because Ed was and he wasn't.
It has been hinted that Eddy is xenophobic on a few occasions. In No Speak da Ed, he judges his Korean penpal as a stupid person who would be easy to scam. He's shown disrespect for Rolf's Norwegian culture on many occasions. Eddy could also be considered a sociopath because he seems to find the idea of people getting hurt funny.
Eddy's most obvious interest at heart is earning/spending money, for which his scams are concocted in the first place. Until his big brother, an unseen character, left the neighbourhood, these scams worked fine. However, during the era which the program's set in, some still work to an extent, but not many of them. He often tries to get money to spend on jawbreakers.
Many of his negative qualities, and yet relative popularity with the viewers, make Eddy something of an anti-hero.
[edit] Rivalry and enemies
Eddy's most obvious rival at first sight is Kevin, the jock on the block. This is probably more or less because Kevin has everything Eddy doesn't: the respect of the other kids, a garage full of jawbreakers, and various other things. Kevin hardly ever refers to Eddy by his first name, usually calling him 'dork/dorky'.
In the episode Robbin' Ed, Eddy became the nemesis of Captain Mellonhead, aka Jonny 2x4. After the hero took the money that Eddy had conned out of the kids back to its rightful owners, Eddy vowed revenge, and became Professor Scam, a takeoff on the various pop culture/comic book villains that are famous today. In the end, however, on the verge of success, Eddy was beaten. Whilst he said he would return one day, a further clash between Captain Mellonhead and Professor Scam has never featured in the show.
Sarah is also an enemy of Eddy's due to her spoiled actions and quick-tempered behavior which can be comparable to Eddy's. Sarah usually ruins Eddy's scam by blackmailing or forcing Ed to do something for her during a scam. Eddy cannot stand Ed being bossed around and will either stand up for him or toughen Ed up to remind her that he is the big brother. It has also been hinted that she especially dislikes Eddy the most.
In the episode Ed in a Half Shell, Sarah forces the Eds by watching Jimmy. If they fail, Jimmy will blow the whistle which literally calls Sarah to beat them up. Eddy decideds to turn Jimmy into his equal counterpart by scaming kids which somehow led to him being more successful than the Eds. Eddy tries take his "fair share" of the cash, but Jimmy refused to share. Eddy then, takes it from him and Jimmy rambunctiously tries to get it back. Ed accidentally blows the whistle and Sarah arrives to Jimmy's rescue. Jimmy makes up a lie saying the Eds made him eat dirt and Sarah beats them up. Since then, Jimmy has became more of a crafty and cunning artist who outperforms the Eds.
[edit] Eddy's brother
Eddy constantly refers to his big brother, who left the cul-de-sac at an uncertain time before the show began. Although the audience never sees his brother, an unseen character, there is no doubt he exists, all of the characters having met him at some point in his life. Eddy deeply admired his brother. Ostensibly, Eddy gets his con merchant streak from his sibling, although his brother's scams were considerably more successful than his ever were.
[edit] Last name
In a reversal of the central character in the detective series of Columbo, none of the characters' surnames with the exception of the Kanker sisters, and Jonny, are explicitly revealed in the series. The closest thing to a definite answer for Eddy's seems to come in the episodes My Fair Ed and Mission Ed-Possible, when Ed refers to his friend as 'Eddy McGhee'.
