Edøy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edøy is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, located in the southern part of Smøla.
It was created as Edøy formannskapsdistrikt in 1837. A royal resolution of 3 May 1873 directed that Tustern parish be separated from Edøy to create a separate municipality. This happened on 1 January 1874, leaving Edøy with 2,166 inhabitants. On 1 January 1915 the districts of Hopen and Brattvær were separated from Edøy to create distinct municipalities. This split left Edøy with a population of 973.
On 1 January 1960 the 1915 partition was reversed, reuniting the municipalities Brattvær, Edøy and Hopen under the new name Smøla. Prior to the merger Edøy had a population of 1,135.
