Eclipse Comet of 1882

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eclipse Comet of 1882 (modern formal designation: X/1882 K1) was a comet which was discovered by observers in Egypt during the solar eclipse of 1882. Its appearance was a complete surprise, and the sighting of it during the eclipse was the only time it was seen. It was a member of the Kreutz Sungrazers, and preceded the appearance of the Great Comet of 1882, another member of the group, by just four months.

The comet is sometimes referred to as Tewfik, a name proposed by a party of astronomers in honour of the Khedive of Egypt at the time, Tewfik Pasha.
