[edit] History
Eastern Suburbs Football (soccer) Club, originally formed in 1922, is one of the oldest and most established clubs in Queensland, situated in the most central location of all the semi-pro clubs, approximately 2.7 km from the city centre. The history of the club and its association with Heath Park goes back well over 40 years. In 1969 the Easts-Aston Villa Club, a successful 2nd Division competitor consisting mainly of young players who had advanced through their junior ranks, amalgamated with the 1st Division Merton Rovers. It was the blend of experience and youth that ensured the newly founded Merton-East Football Club continued success.
The club as it is currently named came into being in September 1980 and was incorporated the same year. However, this was only a change of name primarily to identify the club with a specific area of Brisbane to promote sponsorship and support for our entry into the State League competition which was the Premier League in Queensland.
History will show that Merton Rovers, Merton-Easts and Eastern Suburbs have played in 11 First Division Grand Finals and have been successful on 6 occasions. Distinguished 'old boys' of the club include Mr Ross Melville, current Chairman of the Brisbane Strikers and CEO of YMCA and Mr Bill Hayden, the former Governor-General of Australia. Others who have represented the club at National level include Eddie Riley, Eric Patterson, Steve Dolan, Leif Peterson and Steve Perry.
The recent success enjoyed by the senior teams and the club as a whole has galvanised us, and we are supremely confident that we will again have strong and well prepared teams for future campaigns.
This club of semiprofessional and amateur players, together with our qualified coaching staff, dedicated directors and tireless volunteers, will again be doing everything in their power to provide not only a soccer facility for the local area, but a place in which the community can be entertained by an exciting brand of soccer involving the best players in Queensland.
In the junior ranks East's suffered a decline in numbers during the 1980's as urban sprawl saw young families move to outlaying suburbs of Brisbane in search of new houses and affordable land. However, we are noticing a definite resurgence in the number of junior registrations, particularly among the very young players. This would indicate that families are now beginning to move back into an area that has been so greatly affected by redevelopment in the last decade. The increasingly favorable demographics give us great hopes for the future.
Eastern Suburbs has been affiliated with the Queensland Soccer Federation for over 70 years and currently fields the following teams.
