East Machias is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States on the East Machias River. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 1,298.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.6 km² (40.0 mi²). 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it (12.00%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,298 people, 540 households, and 370 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.2/km² (36.9/mi²). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 8.5/km² (22.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.84% White, 0.31% Native American, 0.08% Asian, and 0.77% from two or more races.

There were 540 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,073, and the median income for a family was $32,065. Males had a median income of $26,364 versus $19,118 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,254. About 12.2% of families and 17.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 20.4% of those age 65 or over.
