East Hills is an intermediate terminus on the East Hills line, at East Hills Sydney, Australia, which continues to join the Main South Line at Glenfield.

[edit] History

The station opened in the 1930's as the terminus of the East Hills line. It had a brick building on an island platform in the style of other stations on the East Hills line. The line was single track from Riverwood and unelectrified at opening. Electrification followed, then the station was completely rebuilt and slightly relocated in 1987 when the line was extended from East Hills to the Main South Line at Glenfield.

[edit] Present station and service

East Hills has two through tracks (platforms 2 and 3) and a side terminating track (platform 1). In total, there is one island platform (platforms 1 and 2) and one side platform (platform 3). It is of modern concrete and steel construction, with a ramp down from platform level to the entrance and booking office below.

The single terminating track is inadequate to service the four terminating trains per hour which is the typical service level in the off peak. As part of the Clearways project, a new intermediate terminus with four platforms in all is to be built two stations closer to the city at Revesby, due for completion ca2008.

Trains arriving in the turnback platform obstruct Sydney CBD bound trains - this is the main disadvantage of side turnbacks. Platforms are numbered so that citybound platforms come before outward bound platforms.

East Hills Turnback: The track diagram is shown with Sydney on the left. The top of the diagram is south. The arrows show that trains normally use the left-hand track. There is a facing (or righthand) crossover leading to the Turnback Platform. There is a trailing (or lefthand) crossover (shown in green) for emergency use only.
