East Anatolia Region

East Anatolia Region (Turkish: Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi) encompasses the eastern provinces of Turkey, and it is one of the 7 non-administrative sub-division used for census purposes.
Name was given to this region at First Geopgraphy Congress, 1941.
It has the biggest average altitude, biggest area and lowest population density among other regions of Turkey

East Anatolia Region is located at the eastern most part of Anatolia,Turkey. It is bounded by; Central Anatolia Region at west, Black Sea Region at north, Southeast Anatolia Region and Iraq at south and; Iran, Nakhichevan and Armenia at east.

Area of the region is 171.061 km² which is the 21% of total area of Turkey

Total population is 6,100,000 (2000 census). Rural population is higher than urban population. Migration level (to the other regions, especially to Marmara Region) is high and population density (35 person/km²) is lover than Turkey average(85 person/km²).

Average altitude is 2200 m. Major geographic shapes are, plains, platos and massifs.There are some volcanic activities today.

  • Massifs and mountains;
    • There are three massif lines in the diraction of north-south;
      • At north;Çimen Dağı, Kop Dağıand Yalnızçam mountains;
      • At middle;Munzur, Karasu Dağı, Aras Dağı mountains
      • At south;Southeast Tauros, Bitlis, Hakkari, and Buzul mountains.
    • Also,volcanic mountains; Nemrut, Süphan, Tendürek and Ağrı are in the region.

  • Since the region is far to seas, and has high altitude; it has a long winter and short summer periods.

Winter period is cold and snowy, summer period is cool in high lands and hot in low lands. Region has lowest temperature in Turkey.(-25°C) Summer average is about 20°C. Annual temperature difference is highest in Turkey. However, some areas in the region has different microclimates. As an example Iğdır(near Ağrı mountain has a very warm climate.

  • Region has the 11% percent of total foresty area of Turkey(Fifth in rank).Oak and yellowpine trees has majority in forests.
  • Platos and plains are meadowy places.
  • Region has a plentifull of endemic plants and animals.
