East Amherst is a name given to the geographical area covered by the zip code 14051, which straddles the boundary known as Transit Road (NY 78), separating the towns of Amherst and Clarence in Erie County, New York, USA. Its area code is 14051, which also covers Swormville.
The name "East Amherst" only came into use after the farmland in this area was developed into residential subdivions during the 1970's and eighties. The name "East Amherst" was thought to give thr new residents a contrived sense of prestige.
East Amherst covers approximately 15 square miles and is contained entirely within the perimeter of zip code 14051. The United States Census 2000 found that this affluent suburb of Buffalo, New York has a population of 17,991 and 6,280 housing units.
East Amherst is centered in an area originally known as "Transit Station," a name that has its origins in the railroad station of the New York Central “Peanut Line” that crossed Transit Road just north of Muegel Road.
In 2005, Amherst, New York was recognized by CNN / Money Magazine as one of the Best Places to Live (41st Finalist) in the United States.
The central offices of the Williamsville Central School District are located in East Amherst as are 3 of its 14 schools (Dodge Elementary School, Transit Middle School, and Williamsville East High School).
Fire protection is primarily provided by this community’s namesake, East Amherst Fire Department, as well as by Swormsville Fire Company and Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Company.
