The story of how EastEnders made it to the small screen, by the soap's creators.
  • Public Secrets: EastEnders and its Audience
BUCKINGHAM, David (1987, BFI, ISBN 0-85170-210-4)
It analyses the organisational pressures faced by the producers when creating the programme. It also examines the processes of how the audience was marked out. The author points out that ratings success can cause high profile controversies. He also notes that EastEnders was brought to the screen without any solid empirical research and was based on ‘professional intuition’.

An examination of the representation of black people on television.
The section on EastEnders begins with the early impressions of Christine Geraghty (from an article in Marxism Today, August 1985). She gives qualified approval to the soap but notes that although there were several black characters in EastEnders, the norm was represented by the white working class Fowler and Beale families.

The book focuses mainly on the Beale family, in particular Lou, Pete and Pauline, as well as a sub-plot involving Dr. Harold Legg and his father Gregory. The book takes place between Albert Beale's death in 1957, and the birth of Mark Fowler in 1968.
