Earth is an American drone band based in Seattle, Washington, formed in 1990 by Dylan Carlson, Slim Moon, and Greg Babior. Although at different times they have played various styles of music, they are best know as pioneers of a minimalistic, long and repetitive form of doom metal known as drone. Sometimes, they are labeled as doom metal but they have little to do with metal, at least in their current sound. However, their first two or three albums could be seen as an extreme variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins. They are highly respected in the underground, especially in doom/sludge communities. [citation needed] The band at some point moved to Seattle, where they met with grunge music icon Kurt Cobain who sang lead vocals in the song "Divine and Bright", from a demo included on the re-release of the live album Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Dylan Carlson has been the driving force of the band and still remains the core of an ever changing line-up. Well known drone band Sunn O))) were also named after Earth's (and thence Sunn O)))'s) amps of choice, Sunn.
