Earl of Wharncliffe

Earl of Wharncliffe, in the West Riding of the County of York, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1876 for Edward Montagu-Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 3rd Baron Wharncliffe. He was given the courtesy title of Viscount Carlton, of Carlton in the West Riding in the County of York, at the same time. Both peerages were created with remainder to his younger brother Hon. Francis Dudley Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie. Lord Wharncliffe was succeeded by his nephew, the second Earl.
The title of Baron Wharncliffe, of Wortley in the County of York, had been created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1826 for the first Earl's grandfather James Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie. He was the son of Hon. James Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, second son of Prime Minister John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute and his wife Mary Stuart, 1st Baroness Mount Stuart, daughter of Edward Wortley Montagu (grandson of Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich) and his wife, the authoress Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Consequently, the present holder of the Earldom of Wharncliffe is also in remainder to the Earldom of Bute and its subsidiary titles, now held by his kinsman the Marquess of Bute.
Another member of the family was the Conservative politician Charles Beilby Stuart-Wortley, 1st Baron Stuart of Wortley. He was the son of Hon. James Archibald Stuart-Wortley (Solicitor-General from 1856 to 1857), third son of the first Baron Wharncliffe.
