The title of Earl of Dorchester was created in the Peerage of Great Britain on 18 May 1792 together with the subsidiary title Viscount Milton for Joseph Damer, who already held the titles Baron Milton in the Peerage of Ireland and Peerage of Great Britain. The title became extinct on the death of the 2nd Earl on 7 March 1808.

Separate titles of Marquess of Dorchester have also been held by the Earls of Kingston, Catherine Sedley held the title Countess of Dorchester, and the Carleton family were twice created Baron Dorchester.
