Earl of Clare

The title Earl of Clare was first created in the Peerage of England in 1624 for John Holles, 1st Baron Haughton. The 4th Earl was created Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Marquess of Clare, but all his titles became extinct on his death.
The title was created again in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1714 for Thomas Pelham-Holles, 2nd Baron Pelham, with the subsidiary title of Viscount Haughton. He was further created Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Marquess of Clare, and then also Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne and finally Baron Pelham, but both Clare titles (along with the original Barony of Pelham and the Dukedom of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) became extinct on his death.
The title was also created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1795 for John FitzGibbon, 1st Viscount FitzGibbon, the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The 1st Earl was subsequently also created Baron FitzGibbon, of Lower Connello in the County of Limerick in 1789, Viscount FitzGibbon in 1793 and Baron FitzGibbon, of Sidbury in the County of Devon in 1799. The first barony and the viscountcy were in the Peerage of Ireland, the second barony was in the Peerage of Great Britain. All titles became extinct, as the 3rd Earl died in 1864.
