Earl Thomas Ferrell (born March 27, 1958 in Halifax, Virginia), was a former professional football player who was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 5th round of the 1982 NFL Draft. A 6'0", 220 lbs. running back from East Tennessee State, Ferrell played his entire NFL career for the Cardinals from 1982-1989. He led all Cardinals running backs in rushing yards during the 1988 and 1989 seasons, the team's first two years playing in Phoenix.
He was the first player ever, and one of only three in the school's history, to be selected in the after playing college football at ETSU, a school which no longer fields a football team.[1]
Despite a Pro Bowl appearance in each of his final two seasons, Ferrell's career was cut short due to problems with illegal drugs. In 1988, Ferrell reportedly tested positive three times for cocaine, and prior to the 1990 season, he was suspended for one year due to another failed drug test. He never played in the NFL again. [2]

Since 1992, there has been an Earl Ferrell fan club, who 'plague the airwaves', calling talk radio shows, trying to get the great mans name out on the air. Favourite targets include Pinky Kravitz, Harry Hurley and Scott Ferrell.
e.g.
"Hello, welcome to the show" "Hi there, once again, a very informative programme." "Thank you, sir." "I just wanted to say, I fully support the new baseball stadium, I think the city NEEDS it, it would be great, just like back in the 80's, when that cool cat Earl Ferrell...." "Ok, that was the call of an idiot. Next caller, hello." "What was that last idiot talking about?" "Well, it's a group of kids who call radio shows and say the name Earl Ferrell to make them feel good, I guess. It's.... better than a lot of what they could be doing." "Shut up, I love Earl Ferrell. EARL FERRELL, WOOHOO!"
