Developer: Eagle 101
Latest release: 0.8.18 / 2006-09-15
OS: Windows 98 or Above

WikiDiscussion Manager (formerly known as WikiVoter) is a Microsoft Windows-based application that assists English Wikipedia editors with the participation in Articles for Deletion discussions. You can find helpful WikiDiscussion Manager users and moderators in #WDM in the freenode network.

If you want to use v0.8.18, please read this page and the guide. A link to the site for the download is provided in the User Requirements section.

[edit] Information

  • Written in C++ (Using .NET for GUI) -- when a stable release is reached I will rewrite the GUI.
  • Tool is to assist users in finding interesting discussions and assist those users in doing the basic research associated with contributing to any of Wikipedia's discussion processes.
    • Current focus will be on AfDs. Others will be added in time.

[edit] User Requirements

  • Cannot be used by Anon editors.
  • User must have 250 mainspace (article) edits. This is checked every time that you use this application.
  • User must have {{User WikiDiscussion Manager}} userbox on their user page or if you don't like userboxes for whatever reason just put [[Category:Wikipedians who use WikiDiscussion Manager|{{PAGENAME}}]] on your userpage. The program will not let you use it unless you have one of the two above. (similar to a userlist for AWB or VP, but no moderators. :) )
  • You must not be banned from using this tool. (found to be using sockpuppets is the primary reason for banning)

[edit] WikiDiscussion Manager Features

Currently the features below are ready for testing (beta), all unnamed stuff is alpha

  • Allows easy and informed voting on WP:AfD (more to come... WP:RfA)
    • All effort will be going to WP:AfD, so that I can make this as best as humanly possible.
  • Gather the number of for, oppose, comments and other page specific opinions (done, but buggy because it does not recognize "novel" ways of writing opinions).
  • Counts hits on selected search engines, (currently Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, and IncyWincy (Personal favorite).
    • A link to the URL and the count can be easily copy-pasted, via a button in the program.
  • Automatically writes an edit summary (using the first part of your submission).
  • Allows quick and easy viewing of the article in question, and allows easy copy/pasting from the article to your submission, ("as in quotations")
  • Analyses the edit counts of participants, with those below a chosen number highlighted red.

[edit] General Clarification

This program is used primarily in articles for deletion. The name of the program reflects that Articles for deletion is not a vote process, but is a primary method of finding consensus in discussion. For more information please see the listing in what Wikipedia is not under democracy as well as the deletion process, and guide to deletion. You may also wish to review the list of policies and the list of guidelines before making a decision using WikiDiscussion Manager.

Note- it is planned for expansion to cover more of Wikipedia's discussions. AfD was chosen as it is the largest such process on wikipedia. Others will come in time.

The welcome page says "welcome mboverload" and a user category is needed to use the program hoopydinkConas tá tú? 17:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

  1. The user category thing can't be changed right now, but trust me, I will come up with a way for you to put your name somewhere and it look at that as an optional method. [edit] [v0.7.#5] Done Auto spacing

At the end of votes, there needs to be a space or two, depending on user preference, so that the signature isn't right next to it. --JD[don't talk|email] 00:41, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Prerequisites

[edit] Getting Started

  • Double click on the .exe file to start the program and wait until it puts your username up in the title bar.
  • Find and press the 'Refresh' button. This will load in the days AfD discussions.
  • Find an interesting discussion, (in the upper grid). Do one of the following to go to that item:
    • single-click on it and press ENTER
    • Double-click the item on the list.
    • Press the "View Selected Item button.

[edit] To add to the discussion

  • Click on the Submit tab (upper panel)
  • Type in your argument/opinion/comment in the rectangular box
  • Pick your stance (Keep, delete, etc) from the list or type in your own.
    • Don't add a bullet point to your submission, the program does that.
    • Also, don't worry about signing your name as the program takes care of that as well.
    • The program will automatically put the first 100 characters of your submission into the edit summary, so adding to the discussion is a one step process.
  • Click the Submit button and wait until the program refreshes the discussion page.
  • (find another discussion to contribute to)

[edit] To check search engines

[edit] Single engine

  • Click on the 'search engine statistics' tab. (after you have selected an article, shown above)
  • The search terms that automatically selected are shown in the text field. If you want to change them, do so.
  • Click on a search engine in the list.
  • Hit the search button
  • It will display the count and show the search page in the 'non-wikipedia Browser' (in the bottom panel)

[edit] All engines

  • Click on the 'search engine statistics' tab. (after you have selected an article, shown above)
  • The search terms that automatically selected are shown in the text field. If you want to change them, do so.
  • Press the search all button.

[edit] To copy search engine counts

This will copy the link and the count to your clipboard (allowing you to paste in the submission field).

  • Select the search engine from the list (that you already searched) and click 'Copy Url'. This copies the url and the count to your clipboard
  • Paste to with the rest of your submission.
    • The format of this is [<URL><SPACE><COUNT> The last bracket is not added, so add it yourself. (minor bug that I can't figure out and am not going to waste my time on right now)

[edit] For the new 8.9 release

If you run into problems:

  • First open and go to the Statistics tab
  • Next, under the user area add in a value in the drop down menu
  • Last, click the reload and enjoy

[edit] Done vote -> comment

  • change every occurence of vote to comment.  :) :) because we don't vote. Or make it an optional config? ++Lar: t/c 22:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
    • This should be done by the release version (1.0.0) <when this program is avialible to all> —— Eagle (ask me for help) 04:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Eagle fixed this in v0.8.14. --AbsolutDan (talk) 05:39, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Analytics (influance of a voter by time of vote)

  • Analytics... how influential is a given voter? If a voter votes in a lot of questions, are they an opinion shaper or a follower? Some analysis of WHEN a voter voted will tell you. If they're th efirst or second oppose and the question goes down, they may have either been astute at predicting, or even started, the trend. to see if they started it, you'd have to analyse following comments to see if they referenced this voter. But just being on the right side EARLY a lot of the time suggests something about that voter... more thought needed but that's the idea. ++Lar: t/c 22:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Math!!! this will be fun... but for a later version. Will leave here so more ideas can show for this. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 04:42, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Talk to Gmaxwell. he's pulled all the stats for RfAs already including all the data you need about who voted how and when... hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 18:11, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clear search engine results list when another AfD page loaded

See title --mboverload@ 07:53, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Working on. should be done in next version or so. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:33, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Order

Be able to order the list of AfDs by their number of votes or delete votes, By column mboverload@ 07:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ability to sort chronologically

It would be nice to be able to sort the list chronologically as well - could the timestamp from the nominator be parsed for this? --AbsolutDan (talk) 06:57, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Please do note that this will be done, but will not be done untill after v1.0.0. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:16, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tab names

Instead of the tab names being static and general, it would be nice if they were specific and dynamic - ie when viewing an AfD, the tab currently "subject of the vote page" should be "Article" or similar, and change if needed down the road when other types of voting are added to the program --AbsolutDan (talk) 07:27, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Save display preferences

Minor request: When columns are resized, in the list view, the setting is not saved after exiting --AbsolutDan (talk) 14:31, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Comming soon. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:23, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Correctness checking and civility

Here's two ideas to help make sure that all AfDs are correct, and all interested parties are informed:

  • Automatic AfD check - automatically check that the author has been notified, and the link in the article is correct. These are often not done, which is horribly bad form in my opinion. This should be done automatically on selecting to view an AfD. Often failure to do this can show up a bad faith AfD.
  • Notify author and editors option - for automatically adding "article flagged for AfD" on user talk pages, as this is often forgotten.

LinaMishima 15:08, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

This actually doesnt really need to be done. In some cases when the article is old, the author/creator isnt even watching it anymore. Also, I believe there is a bot request for this. SynergeticMaggot 01:47, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
A fair ammount of complaints that I've heard about have been down to the author not getting informed, and it is generally polite to do so, anyways. I would never suggest automatic notification of the author, but a means on request to drop a message on the author's talk page should be trivial. Non-essential when compared to the research tools, but certainly nice LinaMishima 04:43, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I am working on something like this... it will be in as soon as I get done dealing with the latest rash of bugs. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 05:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Research Tools

The big problem with AfDs isn't voting - it's being informed enough to vote wisely. The following should help with that:

  • Link for google search on the subject - allow the search query to be changed to allow it to be narrowed.
    • Done in current version... all you have to do is change the search term in the text box next to the search button.
      • Thanks - was not apparent from the feature list or image, hence asked. Good to hear. LinaMishima 04:46, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Articles linking to this one link - often reveals a lot about an article
  • SwetsWise and other scientific journal listings search on subject - vital for science articles
    • Will probably need means for users to authenticate via Athens
  • For articles about websites:
    • Google links search - if a website is heavily linked to, it's probably important
    • Alexa search - has to be with a warning that any figure about 100,000 is not accurate
  • List of all URLs within the article - and means to check them out
  • List of all books referenced - and means to check them out on multiple systems - not just Amazon!
  • List of all scientific papers referenced and means to look them up

Hopefully with all the above, we will have a very effective means to encourage people to check an article's subject before voting, and hence significantly improve the AfD process. LinaMishima 15:08, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I am hard at work at most of these. Fell free to nag me folks :) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 06:02, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Wonderful, thanks! :) I'll have to go sign up to use this, then ;) LinaMishima 14:18, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Multiple requests

  • Back (navigation) button in case you get lost on pages. I realize this can be done by clicking the item selection tab and then refresh, but it would be nice to have a back button anyway.
  • Alexa for search engine. Must have. Changed mind.
  • Under the vote tab, we might need a "Nuetral" option. And I doubt anyone will need the option to double redirect, so you might want to drop that one.
  • Also under vote tab, there are also some cases where there should be a "Userfy" and "Transwiki" option.
  • WV also needs to indent the "Comment" option.
  • An option button might also need to be created to allow you to have the choice to not watch the AfD after you have "voted". So 100 AfD's are not on your watchlist.
Also, a question. When can we expect this to be used for the other xfD's and RfA? :) I hope all this helps to make a better WV. SynergeticMaggot 01:59, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
One more thing for the future. It would be a great feature if you could manage to delist an AfD, and relist it somewhere else. Example. When someone lists a disambig on AfD, it shouldnt be there, but should in fact be listed in WP:MfD. So if WV could delist it, then relist it on its proper xfD, that would be some awesome prog. SynergeticMaggot 02:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
      • For your first request, a quick way of doing this is just to right click on a blank part of the page and select back. As back is often at the top of this context-sensitive menu, it's a quick process. Martinp23 14:07, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Item selection screen

I'd prefer it if the column headings were spaced so you can see what the titles are, and they didn't snap back to the default when refresh is clicked. Martinp23 11:54, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Yeah I am working on this... may or may not be in the next release, but this is on the list. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:45, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vote stance

Would it be possible to make WV add options which the user types into the "Vote stance" box, so if i was to type Delete and Protect, the program would add it to the combo box for future use? Martinp23 22:09, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Will be implemented in future Martinp23 22:09, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List sorting

Currently, the list is always sorted alphabetically, by subpagename. Could we get it to sort by the other variables -- number of votes, number of speedy votes, number of keep votes, etc? Or other such sorting options. Luna Santin 05:59, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

i'm for this as well. JoeSmack Talk(p-review!) 21:22, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Hear, hear! Martinp23 21:38, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Done Pop up search engine

It would be nice if in addition to getting the hit list, we could also double click a given search engine and it would pop it up in a window. Sometimes its not the number but what the hits are that are important.--Crossmr 03:32, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi - this function is already in WDM - but in tabs. If you double click a search listing in the hitcounter table, the search page is opened in the "External Browser" tab below. I hope this makes sense - and answers your feature request. If not, feel free to post back here. Martinp23 15:23, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Remove whitespace

Can the program remove whitespace from the end of submissions, to prevent formatting problems with signatures? Martinp23 21:55, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

A user category is needed to use the program hoopydinkConas tá tú? 17:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.7.2.#6] Done Voting button

Doesn't work, it's telling me I need to select an item when I already have. — Nathan (talk) / 05:31, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Is looking into this. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 18:24, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0. #7] Done IncyWincy fails to show that it has results

Example is this. 0 (really has 16 hits). —— Eagle (ask me for help) 23:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

In v0.8.6, Incywincy is removed from the search listings Martinp23 23:23, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0. #8] unable to parse certain votes

Seems unable to properly parse votes for the stats columns where someone adds a period after their vote - ie: Delete.. In one case it seems to have mislabeled one of these vote as a keep (August 6, Antoinette Nora Claypoole) --AbsolutDan (talk) 16:56, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Interesting... I will look into this further. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 01:15, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
    • This is the problem: * "DELETE"Absolutely a "must" for deletion, ; this basically amounts to improper formatting. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 01:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Ahh ok - but it did miss a neutral vote where "Neutral" was bold but there was a period outside of the bold formatting (let me know if you want me to stop nitpicking) :) --AbsolutDan (talk) 02:01, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0 #9] Multiple noms

It cannot handle multiple noms. For example, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anarchopedia 3rd nomination for the Subject of the vote page tab tried to go to Anarchopedia 3rd nomination. PS. If you move your Bugs/Features to the Talk space, users would be able to hit the '+' tab at the top of the page to create new sections easier. I think. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 01:43, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

On multiple noms... is there a standard format... if there is I can deal with this :) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:25, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
According to WP:AFD it's supposed to be (2nd nomination) etc. However, I've seen it without the () so maybe either way. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 21:56, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0 #10] File

The file button at the top either has nothing in it or is broke. American Patriot 1776 05:18, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah nothing in it, thanks for reporting but keep in mind this is a beta version. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:25, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0 #11] Speed

23.1198034 seconds Mboverload --mboverload@ 08:49, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Should speed up soon in future versions - not sure when though - do you get this sort of wait frequently? Martinp23 19:31, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.0 #12] Done V 0.8.3 Typo

  1. In "Item Selection" tab, Neutral is spelt Nuetral. Martinp23 11:40, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
  2. And there's quite a few in the tooltip on the "Vote" button Martinp23 12:41, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
  • thanks Martinp23... as you see I am not an English major. I will try to fix them. :) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:42, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
    • Will be fixed in 0.8.10 or something - some already fixed, new ones found in 0.8.9 are also fixed in 0.8.10 (hopefully) Martinp23 19:39, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Still not fixed as of v0.8.13 American Patriot 1776 02:07, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
        • I've marked this as done, and have opened a new bug for the typos in more recent versions below. Amercian Patriot 1776 - if there are any I've missed, could you add them to that list please. Thanks Martinp23 12:24, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.6 #13] Subject Page

The subject of the vote page reads in wikitext. While true, it is a beta, I hope it doesn't wiggle its way into 0.9.0 ;) American Patriot 1776 04:10, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

This may become a "Preferences" menu setting sometime in the future - the Wikitext version is a lot easier to do functions on, which WikiVoter needs to do in order to work. It also speeds things up for dial up users considerably. It won't be fixed for 0.9.0, and it remains to be seen when it'll be changed. Martinp23 19:37, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Martinp23, in the meantime there is a button in the current version for you to press to get the "original page". I hope that will do for now. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 18:40, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, I've been having trouble logging in, sometimes I have to close IE several times to get Wikivoter to log me in. Dionyseus 21:12, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

In the "Extra" menu of the program, the buttons link to the wrong pages - the problem being that the links are spelt "WikiDiscusion" instead of "WikiDiscussion". The same is true for the welcome page. Martinp23 12:17, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, in the "Submit" button on the "Submit" tab, "disscussion" should be "discussion". On that tab, the tooltip on the "Reason" box (perhaps could be renamed to "Opinion"?), "commen" should be spelt "common". Martinp23 12:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Neutral seems to be mispelled again :S Martinp23 23:52, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Minor

Minor bug: doesn't really effect anything, just a little misleading:
Even when you are logged in, the status bar says "Not Logged In"--Deon555talkReview 00:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] [v0.8.16 #19] Reload Page button - articles with spaces

When "Reload Page" is pressed on an article that contains spaces in the name, %20 is passed as the space character instead of an underscore. Wikipedia returns "The requested page title was invalid, empty, an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title, or contained unsupported characters." for the page --AbsolutDan (talk) 03:58, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
   <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

[edit] startup crash

when i launch the app it starts by checking the category, tallying the names in the cat (which is 62), then repeating this over and over again, finding 0 each time after that. it never stops, deadlocking the application. JoeSmack Talk(p-review!) 05:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crash

Not sure if this one is my fault or not, but WDM would crash for me after roughly 5 minutes. It does this everytime, but only when I have my browser open (Firefox). When I don't have wikipedia open on FF or don't have it open at all the crashes are less frequent. It just says "WDM as encountered a problem an needs to close..." and it always happens when I'm clicking something. --Wizardman 19:49, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

The tools name as well as the page has now been changed. SynergeticMaggot 18:50, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't put categories on my user page. I put them on my talk page. Will this prevent me from using the tool. Herostratus 21:05, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

I think it should work - have a go and if it doesn't, then you know the probable cause of the problem. Martinp23 22:36, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
It will work. As long as the category is in your userspace it will work. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 00:03, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How tied to Windows?

How tied is this to Windows and .NET? ie. could I run this under Mono on Linux? --maru (talk) contribs 05:09, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure, I invite you to give it a try if you wish. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 22:03, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
