E. A. Speiser

Ephraim Avigdor Speiser (January 24, 1902June 15, 1965) was University Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He was born in Galicia in what is now Poland and immigrated to the United States when he was 18. He received his Ph.D. from Dropsie College in Philadelphia and spent his entire academic career at the University of Pennsylvania.

During World War II he was a civilian with the OSS in Washington. He translated and wrote extensive commentary for the volume on Genesis in the Anchor Bible Series and was one of the editors of the Torah in the New Jewish Publication Society of America Version of the Old Testament.
