E's Otherwise is an anime based on the manga series "E's" by Satoru Yuiga, which was serialized in the Monthly GFantasy. E's was collected into 12 volumes between 1997 and 2005. The anime aired from 1 April 2003 – 23 September 2003, ran for 26 episodes, and 3 volumes of videos of it were released on VHS and DVD. It is licensed by ADV Films.

Kai Kudou: Kai is the hero of the story. His only family member is a weaker, younger sister who is said to have extremely powerful psychic powers. It is also believe that Kai has the same power but hides it. It is either he hasn't unlocked these powers yet or isn't aware of them. Extremely sensitive to sweets.

Hikaru Kudou: Kai’s younger sister, she is really ill, and stays in ASHURUM’s hospital. She is often visited by Kai or Eiji.

Shen-Lon Belvedere: Has a twin sister named Shin-Lu Belvedere and a major sister complex. A very powerful psychic and hates anyone who gets in his way, especially Kai. Hates normal humans because of the rough childhood they caused him and his sister.

Shin-Lu Belvedere: Older sister to Shen-Lon. She cares about her younger brother a lot as an older sister should. She was put in a coma and brain washed again after recovering. Seems to have a crush on Kai.

Yuuki Tokugawa: Asuka’s brother, he does odd jobs for money. He also takes care of the kids in Gardo that don’t have a father. He allows Kai to stay at his house for a while.

Asuka Atsukawa: The first child that Yuuki started to take care of in Gardo, and now lives with Yuuki. Asuka finds and takes care of stray animals that she finds. She attempts to help around the house, but her cooking is horrible.

Kai and Hikaru were protected by a corporation called ASHURUM, from a society that fears E's. ASHURUM is 1 of the 12 corporations that rules the world. Found by Eiji, Kai was selected to be in ASHURUM’s special force AESES and had to undergo intensive training in different areas, such as combat, hacking, and psychic training.

When Kai had free time he visited Hikaru at the hospital, Hikaru's condition never improved. After a year, Shen-lon told Kai that Eiji really just wanted his sister, because she was said to have had amazing psychic powers, but due to her illness she was not able to use them. Shen-lon continued to tell Kai that Eiji was just hoping Kai would have those amazing powers too.

Kai didn’t believe Shen-lon and went on a mission to Gald city, with the other E's, to infiltrate a hideout of guerillas that was said to have been using E’s against their will. Kai found some civilians caught in the middle of the battle, while trying to save them, one of the civilians that was afraid of E’s, shot and killed Kai’s partner.

Kai, still shocked from the death of his partner, tried to help the civilians, but met up with, Shen-lon. In a rage, Shen-lon unleashed a psychic blast that decimated half the city.

Later, Kai was found by a girl named Asuka, washed up on a shore. After being brought back to health, Yuuki told Kai that he would not have his psychic powers back to what they were unless he goes back to ASHURUM. After spending time in the city and with the people of the city, Kai decides to stay with Asuka and Yuuki for a while.
