E-mu Proteus X is a software-based audio sample-based synthesis module produced by E-mu Systems.

Its software runs on a PC running the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. For the software to run, a particular soundcard (an E-mu 0404) is required. (The soundcard acts as a dongle and as a DSP coprocessor.)

The module can operate as a stand-alone program or as a VST instrument. It has largely been superseded by the Proteus X LE software, which does not run as a stand-alone program, but will work with any contemporary E-mu soundcard.
