I flew as aircrew aboard the Willy Fudd from 1970 through 1971, with VAW-111 aboard the USS Ticonderoga, CVS-14. We generally supported the S2Fs flying ASW missions. On a WestPac cruise in '71, we were the first American carrier in the Indian Ocean since WWII.

There's nothing out there now to match the "whump", "whump" of that big radial engine as it taxied down the runway. You did hope it kept on turning, because usually they wouldn't continue to fly with just one engine, dragging that big radome through the sky.
