[edit] Name
This name is almost always written Isfahan in English. The version Esfahan is just sometimes used and only by some Iranians who are not aware of the English diction of this word. So the article should be put under the title Isfahan province.
- According to http://statoids.com/uir.html Esfahan is the standard english spelling, Isfahan is a variant. And also the ISO 3166-2 newsletter 2 [1] spells it Esfahan (or to be more exact Eşfahān). andy 15:31, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Hi,
Typing Isfahan in google gives 158.000 results, most of them western and official western sites. Typing "Esfahan" gives 54.100 results almost all of them websites made by the Iranians who are not aware of the English spelling. What you reffered to, Esfahan/Eşfahān is a transcription of the Persian word not the English equivalent of it. It's like using the name al-'Iraq (the transcription of the Arbic name) instead of Iraq in English. --Mani1 15:41, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- The google test may be right, I don't know anything about persian transliteration vs. english versions of persian names. But please don't move the article by copy-and-paste, but wait till Isfahan province gets deleted and a correct move preserving the editing history can be done. Thank you. andy 15:51, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Moving the article by copy-and-paste is the only way I have access to at this moment. Would be nice if you do the trouble and move it in the other way. Thanks. --Mani1 15:54, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

- Please do not move it by cut-and-paste - that completely snarls up the edit history. Noel 20:24, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I would favour a consistent transliteration for Persian names in the Wikipedia. Whether Google and much historic material has spelled the name "Isfahan" more often than not, that romanization is Arabic-based, not Persian-based. I have just returned from three weeks in Iran, and the "official" romanization, used for instance in airports and on highway road signage, is decidedly "Esfahan". Moreover, in every dialect of Persian the vowel in the first syllable is the same as that in English mess, not miss. Evertype 12:17, 2004 Dec 5 (UTC)

[edit] Esfahan province → Isfahan province
- The former uses a Persian transcription of that city's name instead of the English equivalent. The English name of that city is Isfahan; see Talk:Esfahan province --Mani1 16:01, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. Noel 20:29, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Could you please let me know of a naming convention that states it should be capitalised? I can't see one at the link you provided. violet/riga (t) 21:41, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] "County" as "Shahrestan"
I think it's better to translate "shahrestan" as county, not township. Bidabadi 13:38, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
